Unique Ways to Find Time for Self-Care as a Busy Mom

It's not always easy, but there are ways to find time for self-care.

As a busy mom, finding time for self-care can be a challenge. Between work, children, and household responsibilities, it can feel like there are never enough hours in the day. However, prioritizing self-care is essential for your well-being and the well-being of your family. Here are some unique and creative ways to find time for self-care as a busy mom:

Tip #1 - Swap childcare with another parent

If you have a friend who is also a busy parent, consider swapping childcare with them. This way, you can each get some alone time to do something you enjoy without having to worry about taking care of your children. For example, you can watch their children for a few hours while they go to a yoga class, and then they can return the favor another day.

Tip #2 - Wake up earlier

Waking up an hour or so earlier than your children - if possible - can be a great way to have some quiet time for yourself. You can use this time to meditate, read, exercise, or simply enjoy a cup of coffee. By starting your day with some self-care, you may find that you're more energized and focused throughout the day. I can't do this because I need that sleep and my toddler tends to get up pretty early as it is. However, as she gets older it should get easier for me to do this.

Tip #3 - Schedule self-care into your calendar

Treat self-care like any other appointment by scheduling it into your calendar. This can be a weekly yoga class, a monthly massage, or even just a daily reminder to take a 10-minute break to do something you enjoy. By scheduling self-care into your calendar, you're more likely to prioritize it and make time for it.

Tip #4 - Incorporate self-care into your daily routine

Alternatively, instead of trying to find large blocks of time for self-care, try incorporating small self-care practices into your daily routine. This can be as simple as taking a few deep breaths before starting a task, practicing gratitude before bed, or taking a few minutes to stretch in the morning. These small practices can help you feel more centered and grounded throughout the day.

"Self-care is a vital component of recovering from any type of stress, but it’s not necessarily realistic for everyone to plan a kid-free getaway to recover.
But even tiny breaks can help—for example, locking the door in the bathroom for 5 minutes to take deep breaths or sitting in your car to listen to a guided meditation after grocery shopping can enhance resilience in parenting." - American Psychological Association

Tip #5 - Involve your children in your self-care

Sometimes, finding time for self-care can be a challenge when you have young children. Consider involving them in your self-care routine, such as doing a yoga class with them, taking a family walk or hike, or having a movie night where everyone can relax and unwind. This way, you can still prioritize self-care while spending time with your children.

Remember that self-care doesn't have to be extravagant or time-consuming. It's about finding ways to take care of yourself in a way that feels good and sustainable for you. By incorporating these unique and creative ways to find time for self-care, you can prioritize your well-being and be the best version of yourself for your family.
