The Low-Fodmap Life

I’ve gone close to six months on the Low-Fodmap diet, to varying degrees. Before and during Christmas, I held to it as strictly as I could, but definitely had many meals that were not even close to being Low-Fodmap. Starting January 1, though, I have been very strict Low-Fodmap, and starting January 15 I’ve had no coffee, tea or any other drink other than water.

This hasn’t been easy. And I still can’t say it’s cured me of all of my issues. I still have bad days. But, it has helped to minimize those days. Before I started Low-Fodmap, I was pretty much in pain and having issues 5-6 days a week, if not every day. Now, I’d say I have issues 4-5 days a week instead.

I have been extremely strict, where I am eating completely Low-Fodmap, completely cutting out foods that I know affect me 99.9% of the time. One day I had a Jimmy John’s sandwich, one day I ate dinner out with friends and tonight I’m having pizza for Valentine’s Day because I don’t feel like cooking.

I’m not going to lie, it’s been so hard. I’m getting tired of having to cook everything from scratch every night after getting home from work. I’m tired of not being able to freely eat out with family and friends. I’ve missed some good meals because of it. But I’ve stuck to it, and I’m determined to stick to it until I can go back to the doctor in March for an upper scope and -hopefully- get some more answers.

In the meantime, I’ll power through the hard days, meal prep and cook the majority of my food from scratch. This experience has definitely taught me lessons in patience and planning. I’ve always loved planning, but I love planning fun events, not everyday life quite as much. I got a fun new planner and stickers and have starting being creative with my planning in order to help myself out in this area as well!

Having Fructose Malabsorption doesn’t seem to be the end of my issues, but I am working hard to find answers and relief. I have hope that day will come soon!
