Choosing a Surgical Team for Preventative Mastectomy

As someone with the BRCA2 gene mutation, I understand the importance of taking preventative measures to reduce my risk of developing breast cancer. After finding out that I was BRCA2 positive when I was 24, I knew I would eventually have a preventative mastectomy.

Once I knew I was done having kids, I consulted with my healthcare provider and discussed my options. It was the right time to have the surgery. However, choosing the right surgical team for this procedure was not an easy decision. I decided I really wanted to use a surgeon who performed a different surgery on me several years ago.

After speaking with her, I had to interview plastic surgeons. She only had experience working with one, so I started with him. The other two would possibly not be able to work with her, so I would have to find another breast surgeon at that point.

After having consultations with all three plastic surgeons, I made my decision. I knew he was absolutely the right choice and he was more than happy to work with my chosen breast surgeon in her hospital network.

Here are some important factors that I considered during my search for the perfect surgical team:

Experience and expertise

The first thing that I looked for in a surgical team was their experience and expertise in performing preventative mastectomies. I wanted to ensure that the team I chose had a proven track record of successful surgeries and could handle any potential complications that may arise during the procedure.

Communication

Communication is key when it comes to any medical procedure, and a preventative mastectomy is no exception. I made sure to choose a surgical team that was easy to communicate with and that took the time to listen to my concerns and answer all of my questions. This made me feel more comfortable and confident going into the surgery.

Support and follow-up care

Having a preventative mastectomy can be an emotional and physical journey. It was important for me to choose a surgical team that not only provided excellent surgical care but also offered support and follow-up care after the procedure. This included regular check-ups, counseling, and resources for post-surgery recovery and reconstruction, as well as a doctor who supported physical therapy after the surgery.

Personal fit

Lastly, I wanted to choose a surgical team that I felt comfortable with on a personal level. Having a preventative mastectomy is a deeply personal decision, and I wanted to feel that the team I chose understood and respected my choices and concerns.

In the end, I found a surgical team that met all of my criteria and more. They were experienced, communicative, supportive, and made me feel comfortable and confident throughout the entire process. My plastic surgeon was encouraging about physical therapy, and they worked together extremely well as a team. Thanks to their expertise and care, my preventative mastectomy was a success, and I feel more at peace knowing that I have taken steps to reduce my risk of developing breast cancer.
