Bloganuary #4: What was your favorite toy as a child?

I grew up fairly privileged and had parents and grandparents who got me a lot of toys and clothes, and just about anything I wanted, within reason. I was a lucky kid and I am very aware of that fact.

One of the toys (or set of toys I suppose) that stick out the most from my childhood is the matchbox/hot wheels toy cars I would play with. I remember playing with them until I was at least 11 or 12 – maybe even older. And I’m known for playing with toy cars with my kids still!

My favorite thing to do was “draw” roadways in the carpeting at my grandparents house. I would run my finger through the carpet to make lines in it that formed roadways, parking lots, and driveways for my toy cars.

There was a spot in one of the bedrooms, right at the closet, where the carpet had a “bump” in it, and I loved using that area to pretend there were hilly driveways. I would drive the cars to the grocery store, to the mall, to school, and their places of work, then back home at the end of their days.

It’s amazing what kind of imagination kids can have. I could spend hours playing with those cars on the carpet, making up stories and backgrounds for each of them.

And I will always have the memories of spending that time at my grandparents house.
